Apple TV+ news: Everything you need to know about Ted Lasso Season 4

Apple TV+ has revealed that our much beloved American coach, Ted Lasso, will be returning to our screens after the Season 3 finale looked set to be the last we would see of AFC Richmond.

The show’s frontman has teased the introduction of a women’s team to the show, but other details are yet to be ironed out.

With the confirmation of the show’s return hitting the mainstream, Film News Blitz’s Joe Matthews is here to talk you through it.

Where were we left off?

Season 3 of Ted Lasso was praised by many for managing to tie up numerous storylines in one big finale episode, which many shows have struggled to do.

In said episode, titled So Long, Farewell, we see many characters get the ending we hoped for, including Coach Beard getting his dream wedding, Juno Temple’s Keeley Jones pitching a women’s team to owner Rebecca Welton, and of course, Jason Sudeikis’ Ted getting home to see his son Henry.

We also saw Brett Goldstein’s Roy Kent become AFC Richmond’s Head Coach in Lasso’s absence, which may likely be a key focus for the opening episodes of the new season.

I’ll be the first to admit I found myself shedding a tear at several points in the 75-minute running time, but it has now been nearly two years since its release, and there was never any doubt about whether fans wanted more.

What do we know?

Apple TV+ has officially announced that the show will be returning, and they confirmed the returns of Sudeikis as the star and executive producer, as well as Goldstein and Brendan Hunt being confirmed to maintain their status in the off-camera crew at the very least.

As for the rest of the cast, there is still a large amount of uncertainty, but speculation suggests that Temple is in negotiations to return as Keeley Jones, with both Hannah Waddingham and Jeremy Swift looking to pick up where they left off as Rebecca and Leslie Higgins respectively.

Telvision drama royalty Bill Lawrence also returns to executive produce.

A shift in focus?

Whilst we can only guess as to what will take place in Season 4 on the pitch and in the dugout, Sudeikis himself has hinted at a potential new direction for the show.

He said: “As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to ‘look before we leap', in season four, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to leap before they look, discovering that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be.”

On Travis and Jason Kelce’s podcast New Heights, Sudeikis also teased what his character would be up to in the new season, saying: “We are writing Season 4- that’s the official position”, before casually adding: “Ted’s coaching a women’s team, so there, that’s happening.”

When Travis asked about the whereabouts of Ted come the new season, Sudeikis quickly shut him down, jokingly saying: “You’re asking too many questions, and it’s only because I don’t know!”

With the Women’s Super League on a meteoric rise in England, and the Lionesses seeing a huge amount of success, it seems only right that AFC Richmond should get involved.

Clearly, Sudeikis and the Ted Lasso writing team are having fun with this new season.

A new producer?

Another change we know has taken place is the appointment of Jack Burditt as executive producer.

His most recent work, Nobody Wants This, is a quippy romantic comedy, focussing on the relationship between an agnostic podcaster and a rabbi, which is in many ways quite similar to the themes presented in Ted Lasso.

Just like Ted Lasso, Nobody Wants This tackles personal growth and self-discovery, alongside emploring characters to show optimism in the face of conflict.

With this in mind, Burditt’s impressive Emmy-winning resume might be the perfect one to add to the credits of the latest developments in the Lasso world.

Whilst Apple TV+ has not committed to any date for release, it is believed that production will begin taking place early this year, with a potential premiere date being early 2026 or even the latter months of 2025.
