DC news: Exclusive CinemaCon footage and brand new trailer for James Gunn’s ‘Superman’

DCU co-CEOs and spearheads, James Gunn and Peter Safran hopped on stage for the Warner Bros.’ and DC presentation to deliver stunning news regarding Gunn’s passion project and tone-setter, Superman.

Revealed during the DC segment was exclusive film footage shown to attendees resulting in the vibrant new trailer which we have all now witnessed.

Film News Blitz’s Aidan Leo brings along his fine-tooth comb to analyse the latest DCU Superman updates.

Exclusive CinemaCon footage and ‘sneak peek’ trailer

With CinemaCon attendees being the initial incumbents of a sneak peek into Gunn’s stylistic and tonal implementations of his ‘Hope of the Universe’ character, we have now all witnessed the joy and overall spirited allure and aesthetic of his creative entry into the DCU.

Specific focus on the red, white and blue colourway and cinematic colour dynamic provided that hopeful feel that the revamped DCU desperately required.

The trailer seemed to represent unity and a collective spirit, rather than the grim and dire state of reality.

Featuring a chaotic, uncontrollable Crypto (Superman’s pup) along with humanoid, optimistically emotionless robots tending to a wounded Superman in the mountainous and remarkably done, Fortress of Solitude.

Part two of the trailer saw chaotic urban scenes across Metropolis, including crumpling city architecture, a sneak peek into the Lois-Clark dynamic, as well as the expected Lex Luthor scowling facial expression looking over at Superman's heroics.

The film’s stars on the win-or-bust DC feature

On stage alongside Gunn and Safran was the caped crusader himself, David Corenswet, his famed love interest, Lois Lane portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan, with one of the main big-bads in all of comics, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor.

Following the exclusive footage shown to the crowd, Gunn continued the proceedings, saying, “I cannot wait to share the film with all you guys and the rest of the world.”

“We’re still in the throes of post-production.” The Hollywood Reporter accounts Gunn’s statements.

Gunn’s creative vision for the character and the film’s events delivered in his image and perception of what Superman truly is and represents, comes after rejecting the offer to imprint his ideas on the feature back in 2018.

Back then, the anarchic, creative freedom over The Suicide Squad, appealed to him much more.

“It was a long time coming,” says Gunn.

Through Gunn’s moment of enlightenment, he was able to construct a story “that is both utterly human and utterly fantastic at the same time,” per Variety.

In support of Gunn’s views was Brosnahan, saying, “These stories are at their core about the power of hope…and the fight for good to conquer evil.”

“That’s always worth fighting for,” she continued.

“I feel like these stories endure because there’s something in it for everyone.”

“We get to stand on the shoulders of giants … and then find our ways into their heads.”

Brosnahan commented on the acting greats that portrayed the revered comic characters previously.

“It’s a great honor to play a role that exists so clearly in the public consciousness,” mentioned Corenswet.

Furthermore, Hoult recounted witnessing Corenswet’s performance during production, stating, “I felt like I was witnessing the magic of cinema in first-person in real time.”

Superman will be DC’s make-or-break moment

It being Gunn’s screenplay and direction imprinting his outlook for Superman and DC, means a remedy and repair approach to the DCU.

This is the DC team’s opportunity to write the wrongs of the previous leadership and create a forward-thinking, buoyant mindset to buy into and positive reception by fans to rival Marvel’s successes over the last 10 to 15 years.

“This is a movie that celebrates kindness and human love,” assures Gunn to fans.

What can be described as a progressive, inspirational film slate to say the least, the future of DC very much hinges on the success of Superman.

With 11 July inching closer, Warner Bros. and DC will be hopeful of an immense ‘bang’ that shakes up the box office post-release.

Plenty of underwhelming releases thus far for Warner Bros. this year is indicative of them needing a win to launch the new DCU.

“I completely relate to Superman because he’s everything I am.”

“He’s somebody who is an outsider who feels like an alien, but also the ultimate insider, because he’s fucking Superman. And that’s kind of like what I feel like, “ says Gunn per THR.

More so than anything else, Gunn’s Superman will no doubt set the tone, not just of joy and elation for DC, but for the entirety of what we can expect from a plethora of releases that follow, sooner than you think.

Superman being the representation of triumph or turmoil is as much poetic as it is comic accurate.
