Film news: Warner Bros. finds Supergirl Milly Alcock’s cosmic parents

The cast is filling out for the second feature film instalment of Warner Bros’ massive DCU superhero swing.

Superman (2025) is poised to be the film of the summer and next June, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will fly in its wake.

Film News Blitz’s David Bason describes how the worlds of Oppenheimer, 1899, Aquaman and House of the Dragon collide in Supergirl’s new film.

Supergirl cast filling out with Oppenheimer and 1899 stars

David Krumholtz, star of The Santa Clause franchise and ensemble member that contributed to Oppenheimer’s Oscar-winning success has been cast alongside Emily Beecham in the upcoming Supergirl film with the duo portraying the title character’s parents.

Beecham’s credits include Netflix’s 1899 series and a role in Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.

The English actress also appears on cinema screens this month in the 14th-century-set William Tell.

Upon being cast, Krumholtz took to Instagram to say it’s a “mindblowing privilege" to be a part of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

“I was that kid,” Krumholtz wrote.

“Overflowing drawers full of comics… escaping into worlds unknown… imagining myself having powers that would benefit the greater good.

"Joining the DC Universe is a mindblowing privilege.

“Representing the symbol of hope in Supergirl as Zor-El is a personal triumph.

“My gratitude overflowing now, like those drawers did."

With Krumholtz cast as Zor-El, one can only assume that Beecham will play Supergirl’s Kryptonian mother Alura.

Krumholtz and Beecham join Milly Alcock’s Supergirl, with the film’s lead well-known for her role as the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in Season 1 of House of the Dragon.

The trio is joined by Eve Ridley’s Ruthye, Matthias Schoenaerts’ Krem and Jason Momoa’s Lobo.

Of course, Momoa joins the DCU as Lobo after starring as Aquaman in the now-defunct DCEU (aka Snyderverse).

What is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow about?

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is derived from the 2021 Eisner-nominated comic book series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

Ana Nogueira is adapting the story for the screen for Director Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya).

It is a cosmic tale in which Supergirl encounters Ruthye, who seeks the Kryptonian hero to enact revenge on her father’s killer, Krem of the Yellow Hills.

Filming on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow began this week at Warner Bros. Leavesden studios in the United Kingdom.

The film is slated for release on June 26, 2026.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow continues the DCU connected-franchise set in motion by co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The DCU began in earnest with the Max animated series Creature Commandos and will head to the big screen on July 11, 2025, with Superman, written and directed by Gunn.

Alcock’s Supergirl will appear alongside her on-screen cousin this summer, to give audiences their first taste of her interpretation of the iconic character.

After an accomplished performance in House of the Dragon alongside seasoned peers, Alcock as Supergirl is an exciting casting choice that Film News Blitz will be eager to see come to life.

When her casting was made public in 2024, Alcock wrote on Instagram: “So excited to be a part of the DC fam – thank you so much to James Gunn for trusting me with Kara/Supergirl.”

Gunn responded saying “Thank you for blessing us with your talent!”
