TV news: Marvel’s return to Hell’s Kitchen with Daredevil Born Again needs to kick ass

Hells Kitchen, New York City is home to one of Marvel’s most beloved characters: Daredevil.

Matt Murdock’s crime-fighting lawyer is back in the first trailer for Daredevil: Born Again.

Film News Blitz’s David Bason discusses why the show’s return needs to be a hit.

From Netflix to Disney

Charlie Cox’s Daredevil brought in a new wave of storytelling for the Marvel Cinematic  Universe on the small screen.

Bloodier, darker and more brooding than the feature film MCU content, Daredevil spawned several spin-offs (Punisher, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, The Defenders) on streaming giant Netflix upon its release in 2015.

Three series of Daredevil came to Netflix before the MCU catalogue of superhero series on the streamer was removed ahead of the House of Mouse setting up its own streaming service: Disney+.

The advent of Disney+ saw the MCU hit the small screen post-Avengers: Endgame and it’s fair to say the results have been mixed.

The highs of Loki have been met by the divisive likes of She-Hulk and Secret Invasion and more often than not, the Dinsey+ Marvel series have failed to live up to the heights of MCU’s feature film offerings.

Daredevil moved the needle of what a superhero series could achieve when it landed on Netflix and with Born Again a continuation of that story, with plenty of returning players, it can do so again.

And doing so is important to keep subscribers of Disney+ invested in Marvel’s small-screen offerings.

Daredevil: Born Again trailer brings back series favourites

Wednesday's trailer brought Charlie Cox’s Murdock face-to-face with Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin/Wilson Fisk, who now resides as New York City’s Mayor.

The pair discuss their violent nature and attempt to move on in a chilling tête-à-tête, cross-cut with scenes of blood-curdling action.

Speaking ahead of the series’ release, Cox told The Official Marvel Podcast how he was relishing returning to Daredevil.

“The characters in the comics, they’re such great characters,” Cox said in November.

“The dynamic between these two in 60-plus years of comic history is phenomenal.

“It’s a wealth of information and knowledge to draw upon.

“So, we kind of hit the lottery with being cast in this show.

“I don’t want to embarrass Vincent, but it’s such an honour to share the screen with him...

“To work opposite this man has been one of the great honours of my career.”

Cox and D’Onforio will once again be sharing the screen with Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page, Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson, Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye and Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle.

The 18-episode series premieres on Disney+ on March 4.
