Disney Pixar has released a full-length trailer for the highly anticipated Toy Story 5.
Woody, Buzz and the gang return, and this time they’re taking on tech.
Film News Blitz’s Dan Lawrence takes a look.
The expanding ‘Toy Story’ saga
Anyone thinking 2010’s Toy Story 3 was a perfect conclusion to Pixar’s first cohort of legendary characters probably wouldn’t have envisaged that 16 years later, we’d be anticipating the release of Toy Story 5.
But after Woody said goodbye to his lifelong friend Andy, Pixar stoked up cinemagoers’ tears once again with 2019’s Toy Story 4, which saw everyone’s favourite cowboy part ways with Buzz Lightyear.
Now, Woody is reunited with his cohort of toy companions as Disney and Pixar refuse to let a money-making franchise rest in peace.
What is ‘Toy Story 5’ about?
Jessie, now the leader of the toy gang, feels threatened when Bonnie is introduced to a screen tablet device, Lily Pad, voiced by the incomparable Greta Lee.
A commentary on screen usage among children today, the toys are immediately at odds with Lily Pad, concerned by the ill effects the tablet device is having on Bonnie’s ability to socialise.
Jessie recruits Woody to return to his friends in a bid to ward off this technological threat.
The trailer lays out these essential story beats so audiences know what to expect this June in cinemas, and we get some fun visual gags, such as Woody’s bald patch and shots reminiscent of the 1995 original, like Woody and Buzz grabbing onto the rear bumper of a speeding car.
Make no mistake, Toy Story 5 looks set to have all of the ingredients that make this franchise great.
Moreover, after several false endings, Toy Story 5’s release 31 years on from the original means this will be a multi-generational trip to the cinema.
When is ‘Toy Story 5’ in cinemas?
Toy Story 5 will be in cinemas on 19 June, 2026.
After the last two instalments each grossed over $1 billion at the box office, a huge turnout for the fifth film in Pixar’s original franchise is expected.
