Film awards: Emilia Perez and The Brutalist win big at 82nd Golden Globes

Emilia Perez and The Brutalist took top billing at the 82nd Golden Globes.

Hollywood’s Awards season kicked off on January 5 as the film world builds up towards the Oscars.

Film News Blitz’s David Bason takes a look at who picked up Golden Globes in the major film categories.

Best film winners 

The Brutalist won Best Picture in the drama category with voters taken in by the story of a Holocaust survivor turned US immigrant.

The film took home two more awards as Brady Corbet won Best Director and Adrien Brody won Best Performance by a Male Actor for Drama.

As is always the case at the Golden Globes, films are diverted into either the Drama or Comedy/Musical categories and Netflix’s Emilia Perez took Best Picture in the latter.

It was a strong night for Emilia Perez overall, as the crime musical came in with 10 nominations and won four awards in total.

Zoe Saldana won the female supporting actor award in Musical/Comedy and the feature also won the Original Song and Best Picture, Non-English Language awards.

In animation, there was a shock as The Wild Robot, the most-nominated animated film in Golden Globes history lost out to the $3.8 million Flow.

Papal drama Conclave took top honours for Best Screenplay while Wicked took the crown in the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement categories. 

The likes of Anora and Dune: Part Two were among the snubbed films to come away empty-handed.

Acting awards

There were first-timers and surprises in the remaining acting categories.

Fernanda Torres beat Hollywood superstars Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet to the Best Performance by a Female Actor, Drama for her performance in I’m Still Here.

Meanwhile, after four and a half decades of acting, Demi Moore won her first-ever film award for her role in The Substance, which was submitted in the Musical/Comedy category and she is hotly tipped for Oscar’s glory.

Sebastian Stan had two cracks at winning an award: one in Drama for his turn as Donald Trump in The Apprentice, but he picked up his Golden Globe for his leading role in Musical/Comedy submission, A Different Man.

A landmark year for the Marvel alum, who used his victory to shine a light on accepting those with disabilities.

After winning a TV Golden Globe for a supporting role last year, Kieran Culkin took honours in film for his supporting role in Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain.

The cinematic awards were rounded out by Original Score, with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross winning for their work on Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers.
