Film awards: Selena Gomez’s Emilia Perez leads Golden Globes film nominations

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association unveiled its nominations for the 2025 Golden Globes on Monday with Emilia Perez, starring Selene Gomez leading the way in film.

The Brutalist, Conclave and Anora all fared well in the nominations list for the first major night of awards season.

Film News Blitz’s David Bason breaks down the list of Golden Globes nominations.

Netflix acquired Emilia Perez after it received widespread acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival and the crime musical takes top billing at the Golden Globes with 10 nominations in total.

The film features in the Best Picture, Musical or Comedy category and Director Jacques Audiard was nominated for helming the feature and penning the screenplay.

It also takes nominations in Best Motion Picture, Non-English Language, Best Original Score and Best Original Song twice.

Moreover, Karla Sofía Gascón (lead actress, Musical or Comedy), Selena Gomez (supporting actress, Musical or Comedy) and Zoe Saldana (supporting actress, Musical or Comedy) each picked up acting nominations.

Bradey Corbet’s The Brutalist is next up with seven nominations in total, ahead of Conclave, starring Ralph Fiennes (six), the lauded Anora (five) and Demi Moore’s comeback The Substance (five).

A new category for films in the Golden Globes is Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

This type of award shouldn’t be overlooked given that awards season tends to cater to more niche offerings and seldom does mainstream cinema get celebrated, despite being what pays for keeping the whole industry afloat.

Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Deadpool & Wolverine, Gladiator II, Inside Out 2, Twisters, Wicked and The Wild Robot feature in the box office category.

The 82nd Annual Golden Globes will air live on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
