Film news: Warner Bros. tease incoming trailer for James Gunn’s Superman
It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s Superman!
That’s right, the latest cinematic incarnation of the world’s most famous superhero is flying across theatres next year and Warner Bros. has begun to tease fans.
Film News Blitz’s David Bason reports on the teaser before the teaser.
Writer/Director of Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy) James Gunn has been given the unenviable task of heading up the new DCU for Warner Bros. and he’s starting with the big one.
On Monday, Gunn, Warner Bros. and DC revealed that a teaser trailer will drop on Thursday at 14:00.
New Superman teaser is bursting with colour
Two days later, fans got to see a bonus sneak peek of David Corenswet’s Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane in a 30-second clip teasing Thursday’s teaser trailer.
Yes, there’s a lot of teasing going on but it’s important that Gunn, DC and Warner Bros. nail the landing (or flight) with this new iteration of Superman, which they want to blast off a sprawling franchise.
The teaser clip is sparkling with colour, from the Daily Planet to public onlookers, all looking to the sky amid an ethereal musical score.
Then, the red trunks, cape and blue suit are seen blasting through the clouds and up into a sunlit sky.
This colour is precisely what was missing from Zack Snyder’s vision of The Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill, whose legion of adamant social media followers deride anything the new creative team seeks to put out.
But positivity should win out and there is joy and love in everything Gunn creates.

James Gunn: Superman is ‘about looking forward’
The new DCU is about moving forward and that’s precisely why Gunn changed the title from Superman: Legacy to Superman.
“One of the things was I thought maybe the title had a looking-back feeling about it,” Gunn said (via IGN).
“And this isn't about looking back, this is about looking forward.”
It should come as no surprise then that this won’t be your basic origin story, but instead, Superman will kick off a few years into his career as a Metropolis hero.
So what should fans expect of Gunn’s Superman?
Luckily there’s a synopsis, but it doesn’t give away too many clues.
"'Superman,' DC Studios' first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theatres worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures.
“In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC Universe with a singular blend of epic action, humour and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”
Superman returns to theatres on July 11, 2025.
