Film opinion: Bernthal to punish foes as Kratos

Recent images were released of Jon Bernthal’s design and attire on the set of Christopher Nolan’s following epic feature, The Odyssey.

Based on the overall look of Bernthal on set, we could possibly be exposed to the highly anticipated appearance of the God of War, Kratos.

Film News Blitz’s Aidan Leo is here to talk you through the matter and discuss whether Bernthal can pull off the role.

Is Bernthal confirmed for the role of Kratos?

No, at this point, his role and the roles of the rest of the star-studded cast, bar Matt Damon (Odysseus) are unclear.

Known primarily for his roles as Frank Castle (Punisher) in the successful Marvel Television and Netflix produced series, Punisher, as well as Shane in AMC StudiosThe Walking Dead.

Bernthal has shown that he certainly possesses the acting chops for a moody, tragic and dark disposition in a character, perfect for Kratos.

The raw aura of the man cannot be denied and speaks for itself.

What do we know regarding Nolan’s epic feature?

Damon, spearheading the film as Odysseus, will be supported by already established veterans and rising stars alike in the industry.

These stars include Zendaya (Challengers), Mia Goth (MaXXXine), Tom Holland (Uncharted), Anne Hathaway (The Idea of You), Charlize Theron (The Old Guard), Robert Pattinson (Mickey 17), Lupita Nyong’o (A Quiet Place: Day One), Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer), John Leguizamo (Bob Trevino Likes It), Cosmo Jarvis (Shogun), and Bernthal along with them.

The Odyssey will follow Odysseus on his turbulent voyage in the aftermath of the Trojan War.

Odysseus, expectedly, will come across other mythical figures from Greek mythology on his journey home, most likely portrayed by some of the aforementioned star-studded cast.

Nolan and Universal Pictures have a collaborative history

Having previously collaborated on the all-time, unprecedented success, Oppenheimer, Nolan and Universal Pictures are expected to astound audiences yet again.

Universal Pictures referred to their new film as “a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new Imax film technology” per Variety

With that being all the news to currently go off of, I do not want to be in a position where I am rattling off a bunch of characters Bernthal and company could be portraying as that exists in the realm of pointless speculation.

However, I am immensely thrilled to see Bernthal join the cast and if Nolan allows the side characters significant enough screen time in the story then the possibility of the role of Kratos becomes even more enthralling.

Many fans within the video gaming community who grew up amongst the God of War video games franchise have been waiting eagerly on a successful and true-to-character adaptation of Kratos.

Bernthal could be the man to do it.

The Odyssey. In theatres on the 17 July 2026.
