As Daredevil: Born Again is making a big impact on the small screen, fans are heavily anticipating the release of Marvel’s next big-screen adventure, Thunderbolts*.
The MCU made a big splash with its Thunderbolts* Super Bowl trailer last month and its teasing of the uber-powerful character Sentry.
Film News Blitz’s Aidan Leo reviews the Thunderbolts* trailer and what the entry of Sentry means for the MCU going forward.
Will this be the start of the MCU’s revival?
The Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* trailer brought awe and intrigue to fans with the reveal of Sentry as the film’s ‘big bad’.
Many questions arose in response to this reveal, particularly how Sentry would impact the next phase of the MCU, and more concerningly, how in the world the Thunderbolts team would be able to defeat who fans of Marvel comics consider the Superman of Marvel.
What did the trailer tell us about Sentry?
From what we can tell from the trailer, it is clear that lots of luck, plot armor (a plot device wherein a fictional character is preserved from harm due to their necessity for the plot to proceed), or asking Sentry nicely to surrender may just be the plan as far as the Thunderbolts are concerned.
Naturally, this viewpoint comes in response to watching Sentry obliterate the public of hysterical New York with his bare hands, turning them into shadows, literally.
Who are the Thunderbolts?
The ragtag group of anti-heroes, brought together for a covert government mission includes Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, and finally Hannah John-Kamen’s Ava Starr.
But how Lewis Pullman’s Sentry will be depicted as the villain in the film is yet to be determined.
How will Sentry possibly be depicted in the film?
Much discussion has raged on since the release of the trailer amongst the comic book fraternity.
It has been mentioned that in the comics, after Robert Reynolds (Sentry) gains his powers, which is similar to that of Superman, he attempts to come to terms with his new reality but his mental disposition as a result, takes a significant knock.
His detrimental mental state begins consuming him further, separating his personality, one into the heroic Sentry and the other, a villainous and heinous menace.

This counterpart is known as The Void.
The Void goes on to wreak all types of catastrophe and havoc across the comic world, without Sentry knowing what truly is going on.
Furthermore, once Robert comes to grips with his reality, he works alongside other heroes to neutralise The Void, even if it was at the detriment to his own life.
Robert’s dire internal struggle and the world’s grim reality may provide some context as to what the plotline may be for the upcoming film.
Do the Thunderbolts have a chance against Sentry?
It is nigh on impossible for the Thunderbolts to defeat Sentry, even if they all attacked him at once.
The probability is that they attempt to find a way to reason with Sentry/The Void and work alongside the help of some of the other metaphysical entities (possibly Doctor Strange) to separate Sentry from The Void or neutralise them entirely.
With the abilities of Superman, whilst also being able to control and manipulate matter and energy, Sentry or The Void, will be a Godlike force to be reckoned with.
Following Captain America: A Brave New World, Marvel’s Thunderbolts* is set for a May 2 release which will set the stage for the eagerly awaited The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
