Scream queen of It Follows and Longlegs fame, Maika Monroe, stars in a harrowing new short film celebrating the Resident Evil video game franchise.
Capcom’s Resident Evil series celebrated its 30th anniversary with a new game and a new live-action adaptation from Weapons’ Zach Cregger.
Film New Blitz’s RC Stacey takes a bite out of the mixed-media news.
What does Maika Monroe get up to in the new ‘Resident Evil’ short
Set in 2028, 30 years after the devastation of Raccoon City that served as the story for Capcom’s Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Requiem is the 9th mainline entry in the now 30-year-old franchise.
To celebrate the upcoming release of the video game (27 February 2026), a new live-action trailer has been released.
Monroe, who was last seen on the big screen up against Nicholas Cage’s eponymous Longlegs in Osgood Perkin’s 2025 horror/mystery, stars in the three-minute short film, set pre- and post-Umbrella’s T-Virus outbreak that turned innocent civilians into bloodthirsty zombies.
Zach Cregger prepping new ‘Resident Evil’ film franchise
The new release and the franchise’s anniversary also bring with them the news of a new live-action film adaptation from Barbarian and Weapons writer/director Cregger.
Cregger proclaimed he has not once seen any of the five Mila Jovovich-starring films of the same name that were released throughout the 2000’s.
Cregger’s take, he says, would be faithful to the games, prioritising horror over the action-oriented nature of the previous film series.
“There’s something about the structure of those games and the pacing of those games that is so thrilling to me… I’ve never seen a movie that really leans in to what those games offer. I love the slow creeping dread that these games naturally kind of exist in.” Cregger said (via The Playlist) when interviewed about his vision for the film.
No release date has been scheduled for Cregger’s new vision, but we can safely assume somewhere around the Halloween 2027 mark.
Resident Evil Requiem allows players to take control of fan-favourite Leon Kennedy and series newcomer Grace Ashcroft as they try to unravel the mystery of Elpis and the (presumably) horrible things ex-Umbrella scientist Victor Gideon is up to.
