Fans of the beloved UK television comedy Ghosts have plenty to cheer about, as it has been confirmed that a feature film continuation of the heartwarming story is in production.
As reported by the Radio Times, BBC Film, Lionsgate, BBC Studios and Monumental Television have announced Ghosts: The Possession of Button House, written by and starring the original series’ creators, will be coming to cinemas.
Film News Blitz’s Dan Lawrence unpacks this hauntingly spectacular news.
What is ‘Ghosts’?
Ghosts is a British sitcom from the creative minds behind the smash-hit Horrible Histories programme.
It follows Alison Cooper (Charlotte Ritchie) and her husband Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe), who inherit a rundown stately home inhabited by ghosts.
After one of the ghosts fails to bump her off, Alison starts to see and interact with her haunting housemates, and thus hilarious and heartwarming stories of cohabitation ensue.
Ghosts ran for five seasons, concluding with a 2023 Christmas special watched by 7.2 million viewers.
It has also been successfully adapted for other territories, with a sixth season of the U.S. remake commissioned, and other adaptations running in France, Germany, Australia and Greece, with the format also recently licensed in Czechia.
Stars return for ‘Ghosts’ film adaptation
Original stars, writers and creators Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond will return for Ghosts: The Possession of Button House in a writing and acting capacity.
Moreover, Lolly Adefope, Ritchie and Smith-Bynoe return to star.
The film will be helmed by director Simon Hynd (Ghosts, Motherland), with filming set to take place at the real-life Button House, West Horsley Place in Surrey.
“We thought we had said goodbye to Button House at the end of the final series. We never planned to come back,” the Ghosts creative team said.
“But when we had the idea for this story, we all got so excited that we couldn’t resist returning to our haunted home for one more adventure.”
