Blumhouse and Paramount Pictures have announced key updates for Paranormal Activity 8.

Ian Tuason is in the director’s chair for this highly anticipated revival, following his breakout success with the A24 viral sensation Undertone.

‘Paranormal Activity 8’ going back to franchise’s roots

The found footage genre has always been uniquely receptive to reboots, but few carry the weight of Oren Peli’s original 2007 sleeper hit.

After a five-year hiatus since the standalone Next of Kin, the Paranormal Activity franchise is returning to its roots.

New Line and Blumhouse have confirmed that 21 May 2027 will mark the theatrical return of the series, which is currently poised to cross the massive $1 billion global box office threshold.

Having directed the “aural horror” hit Undertone, Tuason proved he could master high-tension scares on a minimalist scale.

During a reportedly spontaneous meeting in LA, Tuason pitched his vision to horror titans Jason Blum and James Wan in just 60 seconds who both serve as producers on the latest instalment.

Beginning in 2007, Paranormal Activity, with a microscopic budget, utilised home security footage and static cameras to chill audiences, rapidly reaching a cult status and earning $193,355,800 at the worldwide box office.

The franchise became a defining pillar of 2000s horror, spawning seven films and revitalising the found-footage sub-genre.

While recent entries experimented with different lore, Tuason is looking toward the future of surveillance.

He has expressed a keen interest in how modern camera technology has evolved since 2015’s The Ghost Dimension, suggesting the new entry will involve the cameras we carry with us every day.

While Tuason is keeping plot details under wraps, he has been clear about his cinematic focus.

Despite his background in Virtual Reality (VR) horror, he has ruled out a VR expansion for this project, saying his heart remains firmly in traditional cinema.

The creative DNA of the original series is clearly present in Tuason’s work.

He admits that the audio-driven scares of Undertone were directly influenced by the dynamic of the first Paranormal Activity.
