Box office news: ‘Hoppers’ soars as ‘The Bride!’ struggles

Stills from Hoppers and The Bride!

As predicted, Disney Pixar’s Hoppers enjoyed a strong weekend at the box office, grossing $88 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!, meanwhile, has failed to hit the mark and could be a rare box office misfire for Warner Bros.

Film News Blitz’s Dan Lawrence takes a look at the opposing fortunes of these two films.

‘Hoppers’ is a box office win for Disney Pixar

While predictions stated that Hoppers, Disney Pixar’s new animation about a science student who transports her consciousness into a robotic beaver to infiltrate the animal kingdom, was going to gross a shade of $30 million from North American cinemas over its opening weekend, the film outperformed that estimation.

Deadline reports that Hoppers grossed $46 million in North America, and a further $42 million globally for its worldwide cumulative effort of $88 million.

That’s Disney Pixar’s best return since 2017’s Coco, which grossed $104.7 million in its opening weekend.

Critics are also loving Hoppers, which currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 94%.

It’s a big win for a studio that hasn’t had much success post-COVID.

‘The Bride!’ doesn’t land well in cinemas

On the flip side of the box office coin is writer/director Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!, a modern spin on the 1935 monster flick, The Bride of Frankenstein.

Gyllenhaal’s film stars Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) as the undead femme fatale, with Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster, and Annette Benin as Dr. Euphronious.

The film also stars the likes of Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal and John Magaro.

Despite an all-star ensemble cast, The Bride! hasn’t gained sufficient traction in cinemas.

Produced, before marketing, for $80 million, The Bride! could only muster $6.3 million internationally and $7.3 million in North America.

It’s a weak start for a film that anticipated a stronger opening akin to the success enjoyed by Hoppers.

It also marks a shift away from the box office success that Warner Bros. had with its releases in 2025.

Unlike The Bride!, Warner Bros. found seven films consecutively opening at over $40 million last year, a new record.

Will the studio be able to bounce back with further releases in 2026?
