What’s next for the MCU after ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’?

On 18 December 2026, Avengers: Doomsday will finally hit cinemas. Fans around the world have been eagerly awaiting this film, especially since it marks eight years since the last Avengers movie, Endgame.

In Endgame, audiences witnessed what was believed to be Robert Downey Jr.’s final performance as Tony Stark.

His heroic sacrifice to defeat Thanos remains one of the most emotional moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, in 2024, Marvel shocked fans by announcing Downey Jr.’s return, not as Iron Man, but as the iconic Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom.

Doom has never appeared in the MCU before, and the casting choice has sparked huge curiosity.

How will audiences separate the beloved Tony Stark from one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains?

Film News Blitz writer Jonathon House ponders this question while looking towards the MCU’s future.

Who is Doctor Doom?

Doctor Doom, otherwise known as Victor Von Doom, is a brilliant inventor, a master sorcerer, and the archenemy of the Fantastic Four.

He is one of Marvel’s most powerful and complex villains.

While fans have long awaited his MCU debut, many were stunned when Downey Jr. was cast.

The big question now is how audiences will adjust to seeing the actor behind Iron Man portray a character as ruthless as Doom.

Who is returning for ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’?

Chris Hemsworth is confirmed to return as Thor, and fans are eager to see how he confronts Doctor Doom, especially when Doom wears the face of his old friend.

Hemsworth isn’t alone in returning to the MCU fold, with Doomsday featuring an all-star cast of Marvel heroes, including the likes of Chris Evans’ Captain America and cast members from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise.

The Fantastic Four will also play a major role, following the 2025 film starring Pedro Pascal, which teased Doom in its end-credits scene.

What Comes After ‘Secret Wars’?

The sequel to Doomsday will be Secret Wars, slated for a 2027 release.

Marvel is expected to launch a soft reboot of the MCU with, or in the aftermath of, this film.

This new direction will reportedly shift the spotlight toward the X-Men, resetting and reintroducing the mutants into the franchise in a fresh way.

In my opinion, Marvel needs to bring a new and fresh perspective to the MCU world, potentially bringing in new and unused villains from the comics that are so loved.

Otherwise, it runs the risk of becoming too repetitive and losing some of its diehard fans.

Will ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ live up to the hype?

This huge blockbuster film with an incredible reported budget of $400 million will undoubtedly do well at the box office.

Marvel’s marketing ploy to bring in huge Hollywood actors and rely on old and well-loved cast members will definitely bring in the regular viewers.

The question is, will this film be able to outshine the former Avengers flicks, or is it set for disaster?
