What would happen if The Purge was a romcom? That’s the question people may ask Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, stars of the new film One Night Only.
The trailer dropped for Will Gluck’s new romcom, where, only one night a year, single people are allowed to have sex.
Film News Blitz writer Bella Ford reports…
‘One Night Only’ trailer
The trailer looks promising. Allie (Barbaro) and recently dumped Owen (Turner) might be the only two singles looking for true love.
The rules are simple; for one night only, from 7 pm to 7 am the next day, people who are not married are allowed to have sex.
Every other single person is looking for something casual, as it is the one night of the year when it is legal to ‘test the waters’, so to speak.
They bump into each other unexpectedly, in Allie’s case, her best friend abandons her and immediately pairs off with a stranger.
For Owen, it’s his girlfriend, who decides she would rather spend her one night of premarital sex with someone else, just as he was about to propose.
A series of unfortunate mishaps complicate their night moving forward.
Will we see that happily ever after? Or will it be more like the horror film as we thought?
Director Will Gluck
One Night Only is directed by Will Gluck; he’s smashed it before with the likes of Anyone but You and Easy A, so this should be another hit.
Gluck told EW that he’s hesitant to compare this film with The Purge.
“It’s less about the act of having sex and more about the pursuit of it,” he said.
“So I guess if you were gonna make this analogous to The Purge, it would be like spending 12 hours deciding who to murder, as opposed to committing the murder”
Barbaro also told EW that “it’s a story about dating, it’s kind of allegory for dating and how intense it can be when you’re seeking true connection with somebody, I feel like it’s deeply relatable. It’s just supercharged in this one-night premise”.
Where have I seen Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner before?
Barbaro was recently in the film Crime 101, with Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, and obviously had a brilliant role playing a fighter jet pilot in Top Gun: Maverick.
As for Turner, he was in two Fantastic Beasts films: The Crimes of Grindelwald and The Secrets of Dumbledore.
He recently starred alongside Miles Teller and Elizabeth Olsen in Eternity, and is hotly tipped to succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond.
Both Barbaro and Turner are accomplished and talented, and in the trailer, there’s no doubt that the on-screen chemistry is there.
What will this night hold?
Will Owen and Allie discover they only need one night together, or will this crazy annual tradition change their lives forever?
Audiences will find out when the film arrives in cinemas on 28 August.
