Back in the game
Just over three decades after starring in A League of Their Own, Hanks will now take on a different role in this upcoming production.
Based on a short story by Dave Eggers, the film will bring his original tale to the big screen.
The synopsis for the book describes an intertwining tale between San Francisco Giants beat reporter Lionel Gregorian and an upcoming pitcher, Nathan Couture; a tall lanky fella with a unique personality and impact on the game.
Hanks will reunite with director Marielle Heller, following his Oscar-nominated turn as Fred Rogers in 2019’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood.
The supporting cast is looking to spark excitement with names including Bad Bunny, Callum Turner and Colman Domingo.
Tom Hanks’ career of turning the ordinary into extraordinary
Throughout his esteemed career, Hanks has been known to play everyday characters faced with extraordinary experiences, managing to capture the complex essence of human capability and depth.
From Forrest Gump to Saving Private Ryan, and Philadelphia, Hanks’ portrayal of human connection and delivering emotional performances stand out, and The Comebacker is set to carry on that trend.
His career in these roles has also been defined by critical acclaim.
Hanks made history by becoming only the second actor to win back-to-back Oscars for best actor, in 1994 for his lead performance in Philadelphia, then for his incredible portrayal of Forrest Gump the following year.
These achievements and stand-out performances cemented Hanks’ reputation for delivering award-winning characters.
However, he is not only subject to a certain role, with his early film days being rooted in comedy and most recently returning to voice Woody in Disney Pixar’s Toy Story 5.
The Comebacker is building up expectations to see Hanks once again in a different light, marking his return to an emotionally grounded live-action role for which he is best known.
So with its release date now confirmed, whether this will become another standout role remains to be seen, but what is clear is that Hanks looks to be the perfect fit for this film.
