Following on from the international success of Godzilla Minus One, the first teaser for the much-anticipated sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, has arrived.
The footage was presented to the wider public alongside an industry insiders’ presentation at this year’s CinemaCon event in Las Vegas.
Will Godzilla Minus Zero live up to the hype that its predecessor seemed to set for the masses?
The premise and returning faces
As indicated in the teaser, Godzilla Minus Zero takes place in 1949, two years after the events of its predecessor, Godzilla Minus One.
The first film, released in 2023, followed Koichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot in postwar Japan, where Godzilla brings terror to an already devastated landscape.
The film won the Oscar for best visual effects at the 2024 ceremony.
As far as the plot goes for the sequel, we only know that this story will continue the journey of the Shikishima family, as they face an all-new wave of destruction.
This one appears to take it in a more global direction, with the last taking place almost entirely in Japan.
Takashi Yamazaki returned to direct, write and aid on the VFX side of things once again on this sequel.
This film marks the first Japanese production ever filmed for IMAX.
Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe reprise their roles as Koichi Shikishima and Noriko Oishi, respectively.
What do we know about ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ from the teaser?
We only get glimpses of shots and dialogue in this, but the teaser opens on a destroyed city as an American voice says, “If their operation fails, maybe we’ll finally get to use it”.
We see shots of Noriko Oishi with a child, and of Koichi Shikishima in a plane flying through floating debris with a strange blue aura about it.
Title cards speak of a new threat approaching, as a shot of Godzilla rising behind a seaplane in the ocean appears.
Then, as a final snippet, we see Godzilla walk past the Statue of Liberty, a turn that adds a broad expanse to this film’s global scope.
When will ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ be released in cinemas?
Gozdilla Minus Zero will stomp into cinemas on 6 November 2026.
