Film trailers: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ asks several questions

Two-panel cinematic comparison: Spider-Man uses a web-shield to block a ninja's sword strike; Spider-Man stands face-to-face with MJ against a nocturnal city skyline.

Marvel and Sony have released the trailer for the upcoming continuation of Tom Holland’s web slinger in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

The trailer showed Peter Parker’s new life without his girlfriend MJ (Zendaya), and his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) after his identity was made unknown by Dr Strange in the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Film News Blitz’s Finn Littlewood takes a look at what the trailer revealed to audiences.

Brand New Day has been confirmed to take place roughly four years after the events of No Way Home

The trailer indicates what many expected: street-level, a large roster of villains and the original feel of the old Spider-Man films, which is hugely exciting.

Big cameos

The trailer gave us our first glimpse at the MCU Punisher (Jon Bernthal) in a big screen adventure, which ties in with the unfamiliar gritty and dark vibe, not seen before in this adaptation of Spider-Man.

Bruce Banner is also included, making it likely that ‘The Hulk’ will be making an appearance.

This is where we get to the questions as opposed to the answers, though.

‘Stranger exclusions’

Sadie Sink, who has been rumoured to play Gwen Stacy, yet that doesn’t seem likely now, did not appear in the trailer, and it has left many fans wondering who she will play.

So, who will Sink’s character be? Many fans have speculated whether it will be Jean Grey, originally from the X-Men universe, as we see someone held hostage in a green outfit, similar to what Grey’s comic book character wears.

Another theory is that it is Rachel Coles, a redhead vigilante and friend of the Punisher, which would explain Sink being spotted in cargo pants and boots on the set of the film.

Although the trailer leaves it uncertain who the Stranger Things star will be playing, it seems more likely than not that she will be an antagonistic force of sorts.

Unclear antagonist

Another thing the trailer failed to make clear was who the chief villain of the film is going to be, however, Marvin Jones III is listed on IMDb as ‘Tombstone’.

‘Tombstone’ is a villain to Spider-Man in the comics, and head of a prominent crime family, yet he has mutant abilities himself, more specifically, superstrength.

The trailer also included ‘Scorpion’, who was famously teased in the post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Homecoming, yet didn’t appear in the two subsequent films.

‘Tarantula’ and the ‘Red Hand Gang’, who are prominent villains in the comics, also appear in the trailer.

It seems Marvel has gone with several different, street-level villains as opposed to one main antagonist, which would make sense given the four-year gap from the previous story.

It could be that some of these villains may even appear in a montage of Peter dealing with crime in the city.

Organic webshooters?

In the trailer, we see Peter coming out of what looks like a cocoon, with a further plot involving Banner surrounding a concern that Parker is experiencing mutations.

This could be part of a subplot in the film, where hopefully we get to see ‘The Hulk’ once more.

If they did decide to make Peter’s webshooters organic, this would tie in with the whole new direction that the new trilogy seems to be taking, as in previous films, it seemed impossible that Spider-Man would have organic webshooters.

The trailer definitely leaves a lot to speculate, Spider-Man films, but director Destin Daniel Cretton, who also directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, seems to have hit the mark here.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in cinemas worldwide on 31 July 2026.
