Film analysis: How A24 became one of cinema’s most influential studios

The left frame from *Civil War* shows Jesse Plemons with blonde hair and red-framed sunglasses, wearing camouflage gear and holding a rifle; the central frame from *Moonlight* depicts Mahershala Ali and Alex Hibbert chest-deep in the ocean, with Ali gently cradling Hibbert in the water; the right frame from *The Death of Robin Hood* shows a heavily bearded Hugh Jackman aiming a bow and arrow toward the camera.

In an era dominated by Marvel franchises and billion-dollar blockbusters, one independent studio has managed to build a cultural influence far beyond its size, writes Film News Blitz’s Jessica Spilsbury.

Over the last decade, A24 has transformed from a small distributor into one of the most recognisable brands in cinema, responsible for Oscar-winning dramas, genre-defining horror films and some of the most talked about releases of the modern era.

But how did A24 become such a powerful force in filmmaking?

What exactly is A24?

Founded by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel and John Hodges, A24 began as an independent film distributor focused on bringing unique and unconventional projects to audiences.

At a time when Hollywood was becoming increasingly reliant on sequels, reboots and established franchises, the company built its reputation by championing filmmaker-driven stories that may have otherwise struggled to find mainstream success.

Early releases such as Spring Breakers, Ex Machina and Room helped establish the studio’s identity, but it was A24’s willingness to take creative risks that truly set it apart.

Over time, audiences began to associate the A24 logo with originality, quality and bold storytelling.

How did awards success elevate the studio?

A24’s rise to prominence accelerated through its success during award season.

The studio’s biggest breakthrough came in 2017, when Moonlight won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, cementing A24’s place among Hollywood’s most respected companies.

Since then, the studio has continued to dominate award conversations through films such as Lady Bird, The Whale and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The latter became one of A24’s most significant achievements, winning seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress at the 95th Oscars in 2023.

These successes demonstrated that independent productions could compete directly with major Hollywood studios on cinema’s biggest stage, helping redefine what smaller studios could achieve.

Why is A24 so closely associated with horror?

While A24 has produced films across multiple genres, many cinema fans associate the studio most strongly with horror.

Films such as The Witch, Hereditary, Midsommar and Talk to Me helped redefine what modern horror could look like.

Rather than relying solely on jump scares and traditional horror tropes, these films explored themes of grief, trauma, family relationships and psychological tension.

Speaking about Hereditary, director Ari Aster described the film as being “about family- the terrors of the past and the horrors of living in the present.”

This approach helped popularise what many critics describe as “elevated horror”- a style of filmmaking that combines horror conventions with deeper emotional and thematic storytelling.

As a result, A24 has become one of the most influential studios operating within the genre today.

Has A24 outgrown its independent roots?

In recent years, A24 has begun expanding beyond the low-budget independent films that initially defined its success.

Projects such as The Iron Claw and Alex Garland’s Civil War demonstrate the studio’s increasing willingness to invest in larger-scale productions with wider commercial appeal.

Civil War in particular marked a significant milestone, delivering the biggest opening weekend in A24’s history, earning approximately $25.7 million at the domestic box office.

However, this expansion raises an important question.

Can A24 continue growing while maintaining the independent identity that helped build its reputation?

For many fans, the studio’s appeal lies in its willingness to support original ideas and emerging filmmakers rather than relying on established franchises.

Speaking to The Guardian, Garland argued that “the pressure doesn’t come from the money”, suggesting that the studio’s greatest challenge remains delivering ambitious creative projects rather than simply generating box-office returns.

Why do audiences trust the A24 brand?

Perhaps A24’s greatest achievement has been building a brand that audiences actively seek out.

Unlike many traditional Studios, A24 has cultivated a reputation where viewers are often willing to watch a film simply because of the company’s involvement.

The studio’s consistent support of distinctive filmmakers and unconventional stories has helped to create a loyal audience that values creativity and artistic risk-taking.

Few film studios have developed such a strong cultural identity in such a short period of time.

What’s next for A24?

The future appears just as ambitious as the studio’s past.

A24’s upcoming slate includes a diverse range of projects spanning horror, comedy, action and drama, demonstrating that the company has no intention of being defined by a single genre.

Upcoming releases include action drama The Death of Robin Hood, comedy remake The Invite, the biographical drama Tony, thriller crime drama Primetime and action thriller Onslaught.

The variety of these projects reflects the approach that has defined A24’s success from the beginning: a willingness to take risks on original stories and distinctive creative voices.

As the studio enters its second decade, it continues to balance commercial growth with creative independence that originally made it successful.

The future of A24

More than a decade after its founding, A24 has become far more than an independent film distributor.

Through award-winning productions, influential horror films and a commitment to bold storytelling, the company has established itself as one of the most important forces in contemporary cinema.

Whether producing intimate independent dramas or larger blockbuster star releases, A24’s influence on modern filmmaking appears stronger than ever.
