Spider-Man: Brand New Day is poised to swing past Titanic in the all-time worldwide box office top five.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is poised to swing past Titanic in the all-time worldwide box office top five.

Tom Holland’s fourth solo Spidey adventure became just the eighth film to gross over $2 billion worldwide last week, and the second-fastest to reach the milestone.

That 18-day run was second to Avengers: Endgame, which raced beyond $2 billion in 11 days.

Currently, Brand New Day sits sixth on the all-time list, having grossed $2.2 billion worldwide, and is approximately $44 million behind Titanic.

The Chinese animated sequel Ne Zha 2 is just another $6 million ahead in fourth place, meaning Brand New Day could quite easily break the top four by the end of this weekend.

But how much more would Spider-Man: Brand New Day need to gross to break into the top three?

The biggest box office films of all-time

Atop the box office charts is James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi, Avatar, which has grossed $2.9 billion worldwide across its initial release and subsequent re-releases.

In second place is Avengers: Endgame, which has currently grossed $2.79 billion worldwide.

That was initially enough to claim top spot, before a pandemic-era re-release tipped Avatar towards its final tally.

The gap between these two is set to shrink with the Avengers: Endgame Encore re-release on 25 September.

In third place is Cameron’s Avatar sequel, The Way of Water, which grossed $2.3 billion worldwide, a tally that Brand New Day could conceivably pass.

Could 2026 see the first pair of $2 billion films?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s extraordinary success could be surpassed later this year.

Anticipation towards the release of Avengers: Doomsday on 18 December is ramping up nicely.

Given the coalition of Marvel characters involved, and the success of the previous Avengers instalment, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Doomsday also join the $2 billion club.

If so, 2026 would be the first year in cinema with two films grossing over $2 billion at the worldwide box office.

Already, 2026 has seen five films gross over $1 billion: Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

This hasn’t happened since pre-pandemic 2019, and represents further evidence that the theatrical industry is bouncing back after several years in the doldrums.
