Clayface was released in cinemas on Friday, 23 October, and reviews have been very positive so far.

Some fans have even called it the best movie in the DC cinematic universe so far.

Although I enjoyed this movie a lot, I still felt disappointed, as I believe it could have been even better.

What is ‘Clayface’ about?

The movie follows actor Matt Hagen, a rising star in Gotham City, who crosses paths with a woman called Mia, who has ties to a major crime boss, Markos Szabo.

As punishment, Markos and his mob carve up Matt’s face, and that’s where the whole story basically begins.

After Dr Caitlyn Bates treats Matt, who is desperate to get his face fixed as quickly as possible, he volunteers as an unapproved human test subject.

Although the procedure initially improves his appearance, the experimental nanobots used deeply infiltrate his DNA, causing severe side effects.

Matt then gains the ability to change his face, using this to his advantage to get revenge on the people who wronged him.

What I enjoyed

Firstly, the body horror in this film was very good.

The extreme gore made me look away on several occasions because it was genuinely uncomfortable to watch.

Director James Watkins and his team definitely got that part right.

I loved everything they did with the body horror in this movie, and it was great to see it executed so well.

Secondly, the acting was great.

Tom Rhys Harries did an amazing job as Matt Hagen, getting the character spot on.

Naomi Ackie also did a great job playing Dr Caitlyn Bates.

For me, the casting was a success, as every actor played their part really well.

Although I had some issues with the movie, it was still a really fun watch.

The issues I faced

There wasn’t much I disliked about the film, but I thought the beginning and other moments of the story dragged.

While some scenes definitely needed time to develop, I also felt that the film was a little too slow overall.

I also felt it should have been darker.

The body horror was really good, but I think they should have shown Matt Hagen’s desire for revenge more.

Overall, it was a great movie and a fun watch.

Rating: 7/10
