Film opinion: What to expect from ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping comes to cinemas on 20 November, and excitement is already building around the film.

The book has been very popular with readers, but as with any adaptation, some people worry whether the film can live up to the source material.

So, as excitement and anticipation build, here’s what you can expect from the film.

What are people looking forward to in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’?

One of the biggest things people are looking forward to is seeing a younger Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada.

Haymitch is one of the most popular characters from The Hunger Games saga, so seeing his story before the original movies (where he was portrayed by Woody Harrelson) could be really interesting.

We already know what happens to Haymitch later in life, but this movie will show us what he was like before he entered the games, and how they affect him.

We also have Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, following the late, great Donald Sutherland in the original quartet of The Hunger Games films, and Tom Blyth in the 2023 prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

For me, Fiennes is a really great casting choice.

He can bring a lot to the character and maybe even show us something we haven’t seen from President Snow before.

Another thing getting people talking is how much darker the story is compared to the previous Hunger Games movies.

The book is more violent than the others in the series, which raises an interesting question: how much of that will actually make it onto the big screen in a PG-13 film?

I think this could be one of the best things about the movie.

If the filmmakers are willing to show the darker side of the story, it could make Sunrise on the Reaping stand out.

What to expect

Visually, Sunrise on the Reaping already looks really good.

The trailer was impressive, and the visual effects look like they could make the world of the 50th Hunger Games feel even more realistic.

Haymitch will be the main character, and the story will follow him during the 50th Hunger Games.

Another important thing will be how closely the movie follows the book.

Because Sunrise on the Reaping was only first published in March 2025, the story is still fresh in people’s minds.

If the movie changes too much, it could disappoint people who loved the book.

However, if the filmmakers can keep the important parts of the story while also making it work as a movie, it could be one of the strongest films in the franchise.

Final thoughts

Sunrise on the Reaping has a lot going for it.

It has a popular character, a strong cast, a darker story and a huge audience already interested in seeing it.

But that also means there is a lot of pressure.

The biggest question is whether the film can live up to the book and give audiences the story they are expecting.

It has the potential to be one of the best Hunger Games movies yet, but we’ll have to wait until November to find out.
