According to online rumours, Lee Pace could well play his second villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Magneto in X-Men.
Marvel has already announced a whole bunch of new mutant cast members.
Following (spoilers) Sadie Sink’s reveal as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel unveiled more cast members for 2028’s X-Men film at the Disney D23 event.
Adam Driver is Mister Sinister, Christopher Abbott is Charles Xavier, Inde Navarette is Rogue, Kit Connor is Cyclops, Mara Boyd is Storm and Samara Weaving is Emma Frost.
It’s curious then that Magneto, perhaps the biggest of big bads in the X-Men canon, has not yet been officially cast.
Pace as Magneto?
According to journalist Jed Fontaine, Pace is in line to take up the role of Magneto in the newly rebooted X-Men franchise.
Pace will already be familiar to Marvel fans, having portrayed Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy.
If anyone would find his potential Magneto casting odd, Robert Downey Jr. is now playing Dr Doom, so recasting MCU actors in new roles really isn’t an issue.
Pace, 47, is a towering figure, 1.96m tall with a commanding presence on screen, making him perfect for the role of Magneto.
He’s also no stranger to big franchise films, having played Thranduil in the Hobbit trilogy.
Who else could be cast as Magneto?
Further fan casting has suggested Matt Smith would be a good fit for the role.
Again, Smith would be an excellent choice.
The British actor showed from an early age that he could handle the lead in Doctor Who with a magical ease, and now he is equally delightful and sinister as Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon.
Henry Cavill, who is never far away from fan casting for several roles, is another name that has been floated around on the internet.
Still, he feels far better suited to a hero than to a complex villain, and if Magneto came his way, it would rule him out as Wolverine, James Bond, etc, etc.
If Film News Blitz had to pick, Pace or Smith would definitely be top of the list.
