On 21 June 2026, House of the Dragon returns, and it looks like there is plenty of action coming fans’ way in season three.
Film News Blitz writer Jonathon House retraces the path laid down by the first two seasons, while looking ahead at what’s to come.
What is ‘House of the Dragon’ about?
The story takes place roughly three00 years before the events of Game of Thrones and is adapted from the novel Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin.
This isn’t just any novel, though; it’s written like a historical chronicle of House Targaryen.
The series centres on the reign of King Viserys and the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
House of the Dragon’s conflict begins over who Viserys chose as his heir.
In the series, he clearly names his daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen, but after Viserys’ death, some believed he had chosen Aegon, which sparked the Targaryen civil war.
In that period, the belief that a woman was capable of ruling the Seven Kingdoms was absurd.
How did season two leave things?
A major moment at the end of last season was when Alicent Hightower and her childhood best friend, Rhaenyra Targaryen, were reunited after many years of violent feuding.
It appeared that Alicent finally realised the consequences of the war and the actions of her sons.
She finally understood that the rightful heir to the throne was Rhaenyra.
The season ends with Rhaenyra gaining the upper hand in the war, which left fans excited and eager to see what happens next.
‘House of the Dragon’ season three trailer Breakdown
HBO‘s trailer for season three of House of the Dragon shows Emma D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra taking control of King’s Landing.
She appears firmly in command, but later, we see her weeping, suggesting things may not go as smoothly as they seem.
Could she lose another child after already suffering such death and destruction to her bloodline?
Aegon appears furious, declaring that he will “kill his brother or die in the attempt,” showing him angrier and more motivated than ever before.
At the end of the trailer, we hear Rhaenyra say, “There is no doubt who the gods have chosen to rule,” while she holds the crown.
We don’t see much of Alicent Hightower. At the end of season two, it looked as though she planned to flee with her daughter Helaena after realising she had been on the wrong side of the war.
Will Alicent remain a central antagonist in the plot, or will she switch sides?
Expect more character deaths
The trailer shows several battles, and the show looks as action-packed as ever.
We can expect some major character deaths.
At the end of the trailer, we see Rhaenyra crying, which suggests, at least in my opinion, that her eldest son, Jacaerys, may be killed at the Battle of the Gullet, which is also shown in the trailer.
The Battle of the Gullet should be one of the most dramatic moments of the series with extensive bloodshed.
Conclusion
What fans are eager to know is, who will rule the Seven Kingdoms?
Will there finally be peace in Westeros? Will the Targaryens remain on the throne, or is this the start of their downfall?
We’ll have to tune in to find out.
