Film news: ‘Disclosure Day’ cast pick their favourite John Williams scores

Two iconic film stills placed side by side, showcasing contrasting cinematic tones. On the left, the movie poster for *Jaws* depicts a massive great white shark swimming upwards with an open mouth towards a lone swimmer on the water's surface. On the right, a scene from *Close Encounters of the Third Kind* displays a massive, brightly illuminated alien mothership hovering over a ground facility filled with onlookers.

At the UK premiere for Disclosure Day, key members of the cast picked their favourite film scores by composer John Williams.

There is a lot to get excited about ahead of Disclosure Day coming to cinemas on 10 June

First of all, it sees Hollywood maestro Steven Spielberg return to the world of alien contact and science fiction.

Spielberg is somewhat of an expert in this field, thanks to films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and War of the Worlds.

Second of all, Disclosure Day has a frankly ridiculous cast, including Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo and Wyatt Russell.

Thirdly, Spielberg has turned to long-time collaborator John Williams to score Disclosure Day

From ‘Schindler’s List’ to ‘Close Encounters’

Williams is somewhat of a legend in the world of film scores and is behind some of the most iconic cinematic theme tunes of all time.

It’s no wonder then that Classic FM probed select members of the Disclosure Day cast on the red carpet of the film’s London premiere, to pick out their favourite Williams score.

Before the actors could cast their vote, Spielberg himself was asked the all-important question.

“My favourite score of John’s is Schindler’s List,” Spielberg said. “It’s one of the most beautiful themes I’ve ever heard.”

Russell noted Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as his current favourite, explaining that his five-year-old son “relates an emotional element of his own being to the score.”

Domingo, meanwhile, highlights Close Encounters, which is ironic as many people have theorised that Disclosure Day could be an indirect sequel to that film.

“I started listening to [Disclosure Day] today, which is quite beautiful,” Domingo said.

“But I would also say Close Encounters, which is fantastic. All this anticipation. The chords, the structure. [Williams] really gets into the emotion of a film.”

From ‘Jaws’ to ‘Disclosure Day’: Williams and Spielberg’s shared legacy

O’Connor said, “It would have to be Jaws,” when picking his favourite Williams score.

That’s a sentiment shared by Firth, who said, “One of the defining moments of excitement, for me, going to the cinema, was when the lights went down, and I would have been about 16-years-old, and I heard, ‘duhhh dun’, in the dark, on the big-screen, never having heard it before.

“We’ve been in love with [all of Williams’ scores] since forever,” Firth added.

“We can hum them, and you can do three notes of Raiders of the Lost Ark or Jurassic Park, and you know what movie you’re in.”

From Jaws to Disclosure Day, Williams has left an incredible mark not only on Spielberg’s impressive canon of films but also on the entire art form itself.

“Half of the success of [Jaws] is owed to John,” Spielberg said.

“And he’s done an incredible score at 94-years-old for Disclosure Day, our 30th film together.”
