Film news: Superman and Supergirl meet in new clip

Side-by-side split screen showing actress Milly Alcock as Supergirl in a dimly lit indoor setting, waving casually with a smirk, next to actor David Corenswet as Superman wearing his superhero suit, looking upward against a bright blue background.

Ahead of Supergirl soaring into cinemas on 26 June, a new film clip has surfaced showing the title character meeting David Corenswet’s Superman for seemingly the first time.

Why is he in his underwear?

The new Supergirl film clip is set just outside the Fortress of Solitude, where Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El has crash-landed on Earth.

Corenswet’s Superman is there to meet her, but a humorous language barrier stops the two from really being able to communicate.

You see, Clark Kent/Supes never learned Kryptonian, and in this clip, that’s the only language that Supergirl/Kara knows.

Still, Superman helps Kara and puppy Krypto out of their small vessel.

It’s at this point that Kara asks herself, “Why is he in his underwear?”

This fun quip further cements James Gunn’s correct decision to put Corenswet in the classic, red pants on the outside, Superman outfit.

The clip ends just as he warns Kara that her powers will kick in.

It’s a neat set-up of the two characters’ relationship, which looks set to be the cornerstone of Gunn’s DCU.

Supergirl is in fighting spirits

This shot clip isn’t the only snippet of Supergirl surfing the net.

In another tease, we see a more confident, experienced Kara in an off-world dive bar, with Eve Ridley’s Ruthye Marye Knoll in tow.

Kara bargains with a brutish alien for Ruthye, with an arm wrestle central to the bet.

A bigger alien steps in, and Kara promptly breaks his arm, setting up an all-bar brawl.

Alcock’s Kara/Supergirl is definitely being set up as a confident, gutsy and grittier Kryptonian compared to Corenswet’s Superman.

What is ‘Supergirl’ about?

Directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Ana Nogueira, the official synopsis for Supergirl reads, “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”

The cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem, David Krumholtz as Kara’s father Zor-El and Jason Momoa, who is making his debut as Lobo.

Supergirl is in cinemas from 26 June.
