Film news: Robert Eggers unleashes a chilly first look at nightmarish ‘Werwulf’

A dark, atmospheric pine forest floor lightly covered in frost and snow under a moody, directional light beam filtered through falling snow or mist. Dark tree trunks frame the clearing, creating an eerie, cinematic winter landscape.

Robert Eggers’ Werwulf has dropped a first-look teaser image ahead of a Christmas Day release.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp lead the cast of the Nosferatu director’s medieval lycanthrope horror.

What can fans expect from ‘Werwulf’?

The first look offers a glimpse of a bitterly cold winter landscape pulled from the film.

Is there a werewolf lurking somewhere in the frame? Perhaps. Eggers isn’t one to show his hand early.

Set in 13th-century England, Werwulf follows a mysterious creature stalking the land as local folklore curdles into terrifying reality.

The film prowls into cinemas on 25 December via Focus Features, a Christmas Day release with precious little festive cheer.

Eggers, never one to undersell, recently teased that it’s “the darkest thing I’ve ever written. By far.”

He directs from a script penned with his The Northman co-writer Sjón.

Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski had more to add in conversation with Letterboxd, saying, “[Eggers] has found a way to balance truly horrifying images with deep, singular aesthetics. Like all of his films, this has high-level terror and anxiety, but it’s done in a way that gives you these weird shafts of light and hope.”

Who stars in ‘Werwulf’?

The Werwulf cast is a typically stacked Eggers ensemble: Taylor-Johnson (Nosferatu), Depp (Nosferatu), Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), Ralph Ineson (The Witch) and Bodhi Rae Breathnach (Hamnet).

Eggers and Sjón produce alongside Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner for Working Title, while Maiden Voyage’s Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus serve as executive producers.

A trailer of the film was presented to exhibitors at this year’s CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, offering the lucky industry insiders a further glimpse than just an image.

Demonstrating Eggers’ typical style of gothic horror, the trailer depicts Taylor-Johnson and Depp learning of a local village’s werewolf legend, a montage of violent, beastly action, and a look at the male lead transforming into the titular monster.
