Apple Studios has dropped a first-look image of Martin Scorsese’s next film, What Happens at Night, which has recently entered production.
The film is far from completion, but rest assured, cinephiles across the globe are always eager for new films from a master of his calibre.
The key details
What Happens at Night is set to be a psychological thriller, directed by Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street, Taxi Driver) and written by Patrick Marber (Closer, Notes on a Scandal).
There is a rumour floating about that Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another, There Will Be Blood) has contributed an uncredited rewrite of the film, just as he did with Martin Scorsese’s previous outing, Killers of the Flower Moon.
The film is adapted from a book of the same name by the American novelist Peter Cameron.
It follows an American couple as they travel to a snowbound European town to adopt a child in hopes of saving their marriage, but at their destination, they get into some unsettling encounters, as their reality begins to fracture around them.
Thelma Schoonmaker, a longtime collaborator of Scorsese’s, will return to edit the film, with director of photography Rodrigo Prieto, whose work includes Silence and The Irishman, returning to shoot it with Martin.
The cast
In the first-look image of the film, we see DiCaprio’s character holding the hand of his partner, played by Jennifer Lawrence, as they appear to be in that snowbound European town.
While this is Lawrence’s first collaboration with Martin Scorsese, this is the seventh outing between DiCaprio and the legendary director.
The other six include: The Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island, The Departed, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Aviator and Gangs of New York.
While we haven’t got the full cast picture yet, the two other big names announced so far are Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, The Hunt) and Jared Harris (Chernobyl, Oceans 12).
Expected release date
We don’t have a confirmed release date yet, but a safe bet would be around Autumn 2027, potentially premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in May of that year, too.
