Wednesday’s Dune: Part Three trailer has stoked anticipation as fans prepare for the conclusion of Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi trilogy.

From the third film’s plot to the returning characters, Film News Blitz’s Zach Heynes takes a closer look at what the new trailer reveals about the blockbuster ahead of its December release.

An epic final chapter

Dune: Part Three serves as the final film in Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy, which has become one of the biggest film franchises of the 2020s.

The space opera tells an epic story of conflict, power and control that starts with the brutal betrayal of one family, the House Atreides.

After being sent to the barren desert planet of Arrakis, the heir to the Atreides family, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), joins forces with the planet’s indigenous population and seeks survival and revenge for his family.

The third film takes place two decades after Dune: Part Two, which ended with Paul seizing control of the throne to become Emperor of the entire universe before launching a massive war across the galaxy.

Timothée Chalamet has all the power

The new trailer provides a better look at the state of the universe after Paul’s rise to power.

It opens to a confrontation from Chani (Zendaya), Paul’s previous love interest whom he betrayed in his ultimate decision at the end of the previous film.

As her rant plays out, we see Paul’s previous life with her and glimpses of the war before his striking new appearance is revealed.

Chalamet’s visual transformation closer resembles the ruthless Emperor he has become, and as the trailer progresses, so do the wartorn changes to Paul’s face.

However, it is not only his appearance that has turned, as the now-Emperor embodies a colder, harsher demeanour fitting of his new mantle.

As we hear characters speak of his conquering of the entire galaxy, propose plans for peace, and plot his assassination, the trailer presents a question of how much Paul’s power will prevail in the epic conclusion.

Familiar faces return in a stacked cast

Paul and Chani’s conflictive departure and potential reunion play a major part of the trailer, however, Chalamet and Zendaya are not the only actors from the star-studded cast seen returning.

Jason Momoa appears as Duncan Idaho, yet, the once trusted House of Atreides warrior is seen kneeling before the Emperor proposing peace and later constrained.

Florence Pugh is also seen in the trailer and reprises her role as Irulan, the wife to Paul after a strategic political marriage.

She is seen conversing with Scytale, a new character played by a bleach-haired Robert Pattinson, and is left in astonished dread upon hearing his plan to overthrow Paul’s rule.

Additionally, Javier Bardem and Anya Taylor-Joy return briefly in their roles, following Taylor-Joy’s cameo in Part Two.

The end?

While the third film is Villeneuve’s final adaptation of the classic story, it concludes the trilogy with several novels remaining in Herbert’s series.

Although the future beyond the trilogy is uncertain at this point, the trailer provides ample to keep fans satiated until Part Three is released.

Beyond the intriguing preview of the story, the trailer boasts bold, breathtaking visuals and a roaring soundtrack, both of which the franchise has become known for.

This action-packed first look suggests that fans of the Dune films can expect Part Three to live up to the reputation of the first two films and surpass them in grandeur, both visually and narratively.

Dune: Part Three is set to release in theatres on 18 December, 2026.
