There’s a lot to be said for the box office being in rude health this year, as audiences seek to support theatrical releases in cinemas.
The incredible success of films like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey have helped contribute towards records and positive numbers for studios and UK cinemas.
So let’s take a look at some of the major successes occurring at the box office.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ adds more records
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on an incredible run in cinemas.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spidey flick broke the U.S. domestic opening-weekend box-office record with a $360 million take.
Now, the film has become the fastest to reach $500 million in North American cinemas, taking just seven days, beating the eight it took 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Tom Holland’s Spidey has also overtaken Toy Story 5 to become the highest-grossing film of 2026 so far.
As it stands, the film has grossed approximately $1.26 billion worldwide.

‘The Odyssey’ crosses $1 billion to continue Universal’s hot streak
Holland’s other massive summer blockbuster, The Odyssey, is also performing strongly.
Christopher Nolan’s epic theatrical stunner crossed the $1 billion mark on 6 August, and is well on its way to being the renowned director’s highest-grossing film ever.
The Odyssey has less than $100 million to pass The Dark Knight Rises’ worldwide gross of $1.08 billion.
It’s another massive win for Universal, which has already distributed two other films in 2026 to gross over $1 billion: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael.
These three massive releases go some way to explaining why Universal was the first major studio to gross over $4 billion at the global box office in 2026, a feat achieved through Sunday, 2 August.
July at the UK box office sees a big increase over 2025
Meanwhile, in Blighty, 2026 saw a strong box office performance in July.
According to ScreenDaily, UK-Ireland box office revenue jumped 35% year-on-year, with this July seeing £178 million earned, compared to the £132 million result in July 2025.
So far, 2026 at the UK-Ireland box office is up 18% on 2025, and 34% on 2024.
As it stands, this will be the strongest year at UK-Ireland cinemas since the pandemic.
With massive releases like Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three later this year, 2026 is really shaping up to be a massive resurgence for theatrical distribution.
