The Batman: Part II will pause production while writer-director Matt Reeves takes time away for personal reasons.
Production on the film was well underway, with filming taking place across the UK, before Warner Bros. and DC announced Reeves’ departure on Monday.
“Production on The Batman: Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,” a statement from the studios read.
“Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”
The specific nature and length of Reeves’ departure are understandably under wraps.
A series of delays
The Batman: Part II has undergone a series of delays that have kept fans waiting impatiently following 2022’s The Batman.
Reeves took several years to complete the script for his Batman sequel, and the film has been pushed back several times.
First, it was due to grace cinema screens on 3 October, 2025.
Then it was pushed back to 2 October 2026, then 1 October 2027 and most recently to 18 February 2028.
That makes it more than half a decade between instalments, with James Gunn yet to bring his DCU Batman to life.
Who knows if the film will experience further delays.
The Batman: Part II stars the returning Robert Pattinson in the lead role, alongside Jeffery Wright as Jim Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.
The film also stars Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Charles Dance and Sebastian Stan, the latter of whom will portray Harvey Dent.
