TV news: Disney+ and Hulu make series order for ‘Glee’ reboot

Glee returns for reboot

Original series creator Ryan Murphy is back with a confirmed reboot of the hit television series Glee.

Original series creator Ryan Murphy is back with a confirmed reboot of the hit television series Glee.

That’s after Disney+ and Hulu snapped it up for a series order.

The show will come from 20th Television, which was behind the original six season run of Glee from 2009 to 2015 on Fox.

It followed the lives of glee club members at William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio while also tackling several social issues.

Confirmation of return

Glee’s enduring characteristic is the popular covers of hit songs that featured in every episode, which still account for millions of streams today.

The confirmation of a Glee reboot comes shortly after Murphy’s recent comments to Entertainment Tonight, where he said: “I just finished the script an hour ago. So, we have a script.

“Brad [Falchuk], Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something.

“I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”

Lea Michelle also returning for ‘Glee’ reboot

Hot on the heels of Wednesday’s announcement of a Glee revival, arguably its biggest star, Lea Michelle, has been tipped to return.

Michelle was one of the brightest talents showcased by Glee, with her character Rachel central to the show.

The Broadway star was first reported to be returning for the new Glee reboot by Variety, saying: “It’s still early-ish days, but it feels good and we’re happy to get the band back together.”

During Glee’s initial six season run, Michelle’s character Rachel, often clashing with her glee club mates due to her determined ambition, achieved her Tony award-winning dream in the 2015 finale.

Rachel also became a surrogate mother to two other popular Glee characters, Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) and Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss), and married Jonathon Geoff’s Jesse St. James.

So there’s plenty of story threads to be picked up where Rachel is concerned.

Social media activity also indicates that Heather Morris, who plays Brittany Pierce, and Chord Overstreet, who plays Sam Evans, are lining up for a return.

Will ‘Glee’ ditch the cringe?

Glee has remained prominent in popular culture despite having wrapped over 10 years ago.

However, social media edits in recent years have exposed some slightly cringe aspects, particularly surrounding the glee club coach and McKingley teacher, Will Schuester, played by Matthew Morrison.

The edits in question tend to spin a negative light upon ‘Mr Schu’ and a layer of empathy upon Jane Lynch’s incredible PE teacher Sue Sylvester, who was the typical villain in Glee.

Will the reboot steer away from some of the cringe aspects of the original, or is the kitsch the main attraction?
