Documentary news: Disney+ behind original Freddie Flintoff film

Disney+ has set out plans for an untitled documentary film looking into the life of cricketer turned television personality Freddie Flintoff.

Produced by South Shore, the Disney+ Original documentary film will peel back the curtain and examine Flintoff’s life as a professional cricketer, which includes two Ashes series victories with England.

Moreover, the documentary will tell the extraordinary story of Flintoff’s near-life-threatening crash during his stint hosting BBC’s Top Gear in 2022.

Flintoff’s journey to recovery

The documentary will chart Flintoff’s road to recovery and return to the world of cricket following the crash.

The incident led to the BBC putting Top Gear on ice indefinitely and cost Flintoff facial injuries and broken ribs.

But more than that, Flintoff has been affected psychologically by his ordeal, as he describes via his return to television in the BBC’s Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams on Tour.

“I genuinely should not be here with what happened,” he says. “I thought I could just shake it off … but it’s not been a case of that.

“It’s been a lot harder than I thought. As much as I’ve wanted to go out and do things, I’ve just not been able to.

“I was full of anxiety. I had nightmares, I had flashbacks. It’s been so hard to cope with.”

Flintoff’s television credits include the likes of hosting not only Top Gear, but Sky’s A League of Their Own and Freddie Flintoff's Field of Dreams.

His popularity on screen is evident thanks to his win on the Australian edition of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!

His cricketing career began in 1998 and saw him play as vice-captain and captain for the England national team.

Flintoff’s story on Disney+ is being curated by award-winning documentary director John Dower.

Dower has had the privilege to document Flintoff’s recovery from injury and delve into his career.

The executive producing team behind the project includes Flintoff, South Shore’s Andrew Mackenzie and Naomi Templeton, and Sean Doyle, Executive Director, Unscripted at Disney+.
