A24’s The Death of Robin Hood showcases a new storyline that we haven’t seen before, and one of the film’s stars, Jodie Comer, has praised this new take.

By taking a different approach to one of history’s most familiar stories, The Death of Robin Hood is proving that classic tales can still feel fresh, something Comer believes is vital.

What you need to know about ‘The Death of Robin Hood’

The Death of Robin Hood was released in US cinemas on 19 June with Hugh Jackman in the title role.

Directed by Michael Sarnoski, the film puts a darker spin on the classic Robin Hood tale.

Critics have been quick to praise both Jackman and Comer for their grounded performances.

Another notable cast member is Bill Skarsgård, known for his iconic portrayal of Pennywise in the movie IT

Although the film has been released in the US, it will not premiere in the UK until 2 September.

A reimagined Robin Hood

The classic tale of Robin Hood is something we all know.

However, Sarnoski’s new film looks at the legend in a different way.

Sarnoski is not afraid to look outside the box, as seen in his notable previous works, such as Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One

As you can imagine by the title, this version of Robin Hood explores a darker side of a character that has previously been portrayed as a hero.

In this, he is far from the heroic character audiences know.

Instead, the film presents a man haunted by his past, forced to confront the violence, crime and consequences that helped build his reputation.

Comer plays the role of Sister Brigid, who is faced with helping the injured and damaged character of Robin Hood, played by Jackman.

The Killing Eve star opened up, explaining she was originally drawn to the script because of how “stunning and surprising” it was.

Why do different perspectives matter?

One of Comer’s biggest takeaways from this film is her belief in the importance of revisiting familiar stories.

Speaking on Sarnoski’s interpretation, she praised the director for his morally complex and “grounded” storyline.

Comer told The Hollywood Reporter that she was “enamoured by his interpretation and how poetic the script felt,” and “jumped at the chance to work with him”.

This film serves a fresh new perspective, especially with such a well-known character.

Comer argues that it’s exciting that filmmakers can find new perspectives on already established material.

She continued to explain that “In a world where we explore and remake a lot of the same material, it’s actually really exciting and important that we give space for something new to be birthed out of it”.

Comer also discusses the moral complexities within her own character.

When presented with the notion of revenge, the emotional decision to choose forgiveness is a pivotal point within the movie.

She discussed that “not meeting pain with pain” separated this story from others.

This new interpretation, according to Comer, is what make its so relevant.

It seems A24’s revisiting of Robin Hood proves there are still new ways to tell old tales.
