Paul Thomas Anderson’s black comedy thriller took home the Oscar’s top prize after a close race with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.
The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as washed-up revolutionary Bob Ferguson, won six awards as the legendary director finally got the nod for Oscar gold after fourteen nominations.
Anderson’s being awarded Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay meant he finally broke the duck, the film his sixth to have gained him individual nominations.
Sean Penn was also awarded his third Academy Award, his role as Colonel Lockjaw in One Battle saw him named Best Supporting Actor, although he was not in attendance.
The inaugural category for Best Casting also went home with One Battle; Cassandra Kulukundis was the namely recipient for the first-ever award.
Sinners’ big night and major categories
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners seemed to have run a very close second, with the most-nominated film ever leaving with four Oscars.
Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor ahead of the controversial Timothee Chalamet, who was just a few weeks ago seen as a substantial favourite to claim the Oscar.
His role as Marty Mauser in Marty Supreme was his fourth nomination and second in a row after last year’s A Complete Unknown.
Jordan, who played twins Smoke and Stack in Sinners, emotionally thanked a long list of names who came before him, including his father in attendance from Ghana.
Alongside Best Actor, Sinners also topped the lists for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Cinematography, with the latter’s winner, Autumn Durald Arkapaw the first female winner of the category.
Hamnet‘s Jessie Buckley was one of the more unsurprising winners of the evening after having comprehensively swept the awards season, her portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare already being described as a classic in the making.
Buckley is the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award in her category.
Weapons‘ Amy Madigan was a surprise winner for the evening, beating out names including Teyana Taylor and Elle Fanning to claim her first Oscar at 75 years old for Best Supporting Actress.
Madigan’s first nomination was in 1986 for Twice in a Lifetime, and sets a record of the longest gap between Academy Award nominations.
Shared victories and shock wins
An immensely rare occasion saw Live Action Short declared a tie between The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva, with announcer Kumail Nanjiani quipping that the “shorts will take twice as long”.
The event is one of seven in Oscars history, most recently happening in 2013 when Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty shared Best Sound Editing.
The Singers director Sam A Davis stated he was unaware that was possible, but both recipients seemed pleased enough to share the laurels.
Netflix’s yearly Oscars campaigns will need to wait for a Best Picture nod, but Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein saw itself looked upon favourably as the adaptation was awarded three Oscars: Hair & Makeup, Costume Design and Production Design.
Although a disappointing night on the whole for Sentimental Value, the nine-time nominee took home their lone win in the Best International Feature category after snubs across the board.
Tributes across the broadcast included Billy Crystal’s heartfelt speech for his friend, the late Rob Reiner, Barbara Streisand making a surprise appearance in honour of Robert Redford, and Rachel McAdams offering a heartfelt remembrance of her The Family Stone co-star Diane Keaton.
Kpop Demon Hunters stormed Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, the first K-Pop song to win an Oscar.
Notable disappointments for the night include the awards-less Bugonia, Train Dreams and The Secret Agent, although Jessie Buckley’s waltz across the finish line remained Hamnet‘s lone win amongst eight nominations.
