The 2026 Oscars are right around the corner, and the best director category has an overwhelming frontrunner in Paul Thomas Anderson, aka PTA.
Anderson’s favourite position was solidified by a major win at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards, and he arrives at the ceremony looking to finally secure his first Oscar, with 14 previous nominations to his name.
Film News Blitz’s RC Stacey takes a look at the latest betting odds.
Why PTA is the frontrunner to win best director at the 2026 Oscars
Anderson’s direction of One Battle After Another (a Thomas Pynchon adaptation) has made him the director to beat.
Having already swept the equivalent awards at the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, and the DGAs, bookmakers have moved him into a nearly untouchable position.
It’s no surprise then that Anderson is the heavy favourite to win best director at the 2026 Oscars, sitting at a dominant 1/16 with multiple vendors.
Ryan Coogler (Sinners) is the primary challenger at 8/1.
While Sinners leads the field with a record-breaking 16 nominations and Coogler has been praised for his genre-bending filmmaking, he remains the underdog in the best director category following his losses at the DGA and BAFTA (to Anderson).
Chloé Zhao, a previous winner in this category with Nomadland (2021), is currently third in the betting at 20/1 for Hamnet.
Outside bets include Josh Safdie (Marty Supreme) at 33/1 and Joachim Trier (Sentimental Value) at 40/1.
For us here at Film News Blitz, it’s pretty clear that betting against Anderson at the 2026 Oscars would be a fool’s errand.
Anderson’s sweep of the major guilds makes him the most certain bet of the night.
Although if you’re looking for our verdict on the outside bet, Coogler would be our suggestion.
Who do you think takes the best director prize at this year’s awards?
