Top Gun 3 coming to the big screen has been confirmed, with Tom Cruise returning as the iconic Maverick.
It was officially announced during Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on 16 April.
Film News Blitz’s Bella Ford reports.
Paramount executive Josh Greenstein announced, “Top Gun 3 is officially in development with a script well underway, reuniting Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer.”
Cruise made a dramatic contribution to the announcement by declaring, “The future looks pretty great from here”.
Bruckheimer and Cruise together again
Cruise will be returning as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, as will producer Bruckheimer.
Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick, will also be returning.
Bruckheimer has produced three previous Cruise films, including the original Top Gun, the underrated NASCAR film, Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.
With both working together again, this new film is expected to be the same action-packed tone we got in the others.
Director Joseph Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick, is also expected to return for the sequel.
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ sequel
The hit film Top Gun: Maverick almost single-handedly saved cinemas after COVID-19, grossing $1.5 billion worldwide.
It stands as the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time at the U.S. domestic box office and received six Academy Award nominations, winning the Oscar for best sound.
There’s speculation that some of the stars will be back for the second time, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, and Lewis Pullman, just to name a few.
Fans are hoping for a second run of that cast.
Plot details have not been revealed, but with the scale of the 2022 Maverick being much bigger than the 1986 original, it is almost guaranteed that number three is going to be even bigger and better.
There’s currently no set release date; the expectation is that it will not come out until 2028.
Re-release in cinemas
Both Top Gun films are being re-released in cinemas, for one week only from 13 May.
Cruise announced the re-release on his social media for the 40th Anniversary.
“If you feel the need…Two films. One big screen. Back in theatres, May 13th, for one week only.”
The announcement of the new film and the re-release of the first two instalments mean it’s been a great few weeks for Top Gun fans.
They are a passionate community, and it has sparked excitement all around with tickets for the re-releases selling fast!
