TV analysis: The rise of sports romance

Sports romance

Audiences are falling in love with athlete-led love stories.

Audiences are falling in love with athlete-led love stories; sports romance is one of the fastest-growing subgenres on TV.

Ice sports appear to be the centre of recent hits because the fast-paced sport creates drama and the team environment encourages romance and friendships.

Popular series currently include the hit Off-Campus (2026), Heated Rivalry (2025) and Finding Her Edge (2026), writes Film News Blitz’s Madeline Rhodes.

Audience appeal

Fans who already love romance are discovering sports stories; the built-in tension from the sport and competition aspect mixed with romance creates compelling stories for audiences.

The crossover appeals to a broader audience; romance lovers can convince their partners to watch a sports-centred show a lot easier than the classic rom-com.

Having the romance develop gradually across a series of episodes, the audience can get to know the characters better than in a two-hour film, which could be an indicator as to why these particular series are thriving.

Sports romance in film

Another reason as to why these series are doing so well is because we’ve seen it work for films in the past.

Including the likes of Challengers (2024), She’s the Man (2006) and Bend It Like Beckham (2002).

The success of films like these has laid down the foundations for sports romance in television.

BookTok’s involvement

BookTok is a huge subcommunity on TikTok where many of the sport romance series we see today have become popular because of fans’ discussions and interest in the original books.

All three of the television shows mentioned previously stemmed from novels.

The Off-Campus series includes five books in the original series, but there are also eight spin-off books divided into two sequels: Briar U Series and Campus Diaries.

BookTok creates the hype and allows the novels to gain popularity through influencers’ viral reviews and recommendations, which proves there’s an attracted audience who will be interested in the books being adapted into a television show or film.

This spikes the interest from big named studios which ultimately leads to sports romances being shown on our TVs.

Beyond BookTok there are fan edits, memes, fancams and other platforms like Instagram and X used for discussions.

Fandoms are a key component in the creation and success of this subgenre.

Why it works

Sports romance has always been a popular genre, but the recent boom in popularity of streaming, has expanded the scope to which it is being consumed.

In finding larger audiences, modern sports romance often expresses alluring ideas: glamorous athletes, exciting competitions, in-depth emotional relationships, and more often than not, hopeful endings.

It therefore shows us that, alongside the streaming boom, sports romance works particularly well due to its digestible, comforting and glam content.

Audiences love having a bingeable series and a comfort show to come back to whenever they’d like.

Importantly, sports romance often creates a creative space for LGBTQ+, such as Heated Rivalry (2025).

In diversifying the content, it broadens the horizon to who can consume. This is something consistently seen with new releases monthly.

Modern romance clearly has seen a growth in subgenres, and sports romance is clearly seen as an ideal platform to express this form of media.

Short bursts of intensity, easily sketched relationships, and beautified interpretations of romance all draw sports romance as an exciting form of modern escapism.
