Marvel Studios unveiled its latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday at the Disney D23 event.
The trailer gave fans a further glimpse at Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, as well as establishing his history with The Fantastic Four.
What did we learn from the new ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ trailer?
Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm is depicted describing Victor Von Doom’s more virtuous past to her fellow Marvel heroes from the worlds of X-Men and the Avengers.
“Victor was always the smartest guy in every room,” Storm says.
“He used to be different. He used to be kind. He used to be caring.
“And then, everything he loved was taken from him.”
What did Doom do?
Doom’s words in the trailer, “all of you have lived stolen lives, but you must now give them back,” ring particularly ominous.
Could this be linking to the reality-bending success the Avengers conjured in victory over Thanos in Avengers: Endgame?
We’ve been told the two films are closely linked, and Doom’s words allude to this.
The focus on some of the younger characters in the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer is also telling.
The trailer shows glimpses of Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang embracing his daughter, Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm holding his nephew Franklin, Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers holding his baby, and a particularly vengeful Chris Hemsworth as Thor.
After promising Doom will “beg for hell long before I grant it”, Thor’s Stormbreaker is easily thwarted by Marvel’s new big bad, who then raises an army of Sentinels from the scorched earth.
Why is Thor so vengeful in his actions?
Their duel in the trailer comes after Pedro Pascal’s desperate Reed Richards repeatedly pleads with Doom, screaming, “Did you do this?”
It’s clear that Doom’s actions are going to be devastating in the new Avengers film.
What’s less clear are his motivations, but the clues in the new trailer heavily suggest Doom’s loss is so personal and tragic that he wishes to inflict a similar punishment upon everyone else.
Avengers: Doomsday is in cinemas on December 18.
