‘Lanterns’ trailer: Hal Jordan, John Stewart and DC mystery

Stills from the teaser trailer for DC Studios' Lanterns

A new trailer has landed for DC Studios’ Lanterns, ahead of its release on HBO and HBO Max on 17 August.

The series will consist of eight episodes and will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they work together to uncover a major Earth-based mystery.

Film News Blitz‘s Johnathon House takes a look at the reactions to this new teaser.

Jordan and Stewart are well-known DC Comics characters, both of them Green Lanterns,

The Green Lanterns are an intergalactic police force, armed with power rings fueled by the energy of willpower.

Kyle Chandler is set to play Hal Jordan, while Aaron Pierre will play John Stewart, a disciplined young recruit whom Jordan mentors throughout the series.

Trailer breakdown

The trailer starts off with Hal Jordan and John Stewart sitting together in a bar, where Hal gives Stewart the ring and describes it as “the greatest weapon in the universe.”

We then see Hal use the ring to create money, which was one of the funnier moments in the trailer, to say the least.

From what the trailer shows, the dynamic between Jordan and Stewart seems fairly comedic at times, although it also looks like Hal struggles to trust him at first. The trailer also features a lot of action, and the series already looks like it will be action-packed.

We see a great deal of John Stewart’s character throughout the trailer, which many viewers have found to be particularly interesting.

There’s also the inclusion of Laura Linney, whose character appears to hold great importance.

The overall vibe of the series, and the interaction between the two core characters, gives off the vibe of the original series of True Detective.

Fan reactions

Reactions to this latest trailer have seen fans split.

Some fans have been very critical of the trailer, saying it looks more like a western TV show than a superhero series, with many fans speaking harshly about the trailer’s darker and more colourless look.

However, there are still aspects that fans seem to like.

Many viewers have praised the opportunity to see Chandler in the Green Lantern suit and are enjoying its design.

Others liked how action-packed the show appears to be.

Despite that, the jury is still out on how this show will land.

Conclusion

With a group of fans reacting negatively to the trailer, DC Studios still has a lot of people to prove wrong.

As DC continues trying to compete with the success and audience numbers that Marvel Studios regularly achieves, the early reaction to Lanterns suggests the show may face an uphill battle when it releases.

Lanterns is created by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof.
