Film trailers: A new look at a mysterious threat in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

A two-panel side-by-side image. On the left, a close-up of a bruised and bloodied Peter Parker in a Spider-Man suit, staring forward with pitch-black, soulless eyes. On the right, Spider-Man stands from behind, facing a massive, menacing Hulk inside a dimly lit room with window blinds.

The wait is almost over for Marvel fans to catch Spider-Man: Brand New Day in cinemas, and a new trailer has recently arrived to whet the appetite.

This new glimpse of Tom Holland’s fourth venture as Spider-Man has got everyone talking.

Film News Blitz’s Charlotte Cave takes a closer look.

When is ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ coming to cinemas?

Fans don’t have to wait much longer for Holland’s Spidey to swing back into cinemas.

His return to cinemas as Spider-Man in the U.S. is on 31 July.

However, good news for UK and Ireland audiences: Sony has confirmed a slightly earlier release date of July 29.

A new look

Brand New Day follows the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which ended with Peter Parker erasing his identity from the world.

Spider-Man, now alone, navigates the world without the support he has previously had throughout the franchise.

Destin Daniel Cretton has assumed direction of the franchise, following the major success of Shang-Chi, and he takes over from Jon Watts, who directed the previous three entries.

Alongside Holland, the cast once again includes several familiar faces.

Returning, we have Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned, both iconic roles in the franchise.

However, how will this differ when they both don’t remember who Spider-Man is?

We will have to wait and see.

A notable new role for the franchise is Mark Ruffalo as ‘The Hulk’, an addition that is sure to excite Marvel fans.

We have also seen Stranger Things star Sadie Sink in the cast lineup; however, in the trailer, she is largely obscured.

This has continued to spark rumours among the fandom of Sink lining up to play the role of mutant Jean Grey from the X-Men, and apparently, this movie’s villain?

Nothing is confirmed; however, for the question of Sink’s character, this trailer has seemed to leave fans with more speculation than before.

With the addition of Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher, this movie is looking to be very packed, in the best possible way.

A darker tone

Much of the trailer centres around Spider-Man himself, which gives fans a glimpse into what could be Tom Holland’s darkest portrayal of Spider-Man yet, leaving everyone hungry for more.

The fallout from No Way Home seems to play a big part within the movie, leaving Peter Parker forced to navigate a world in which he is forgotten.

However, it isn’t only external threats he faces.

Throughout the trailer, we see Spider-Man battling with a darker side within himself.

Potentially giving fans a more complex storyline of Peter Parker trying to control his own power.

The footage teases interactions between Spider-Man and the Hulk, both confrontational and in alliance.

We also see Michael Mando in costume and action as Scorpion, Spidey rushing to save MJ, and taking on a legion of Hand Ninjas.

As for the main villain, Marvel has wanted to keep that under wraps.

In the trailer, Spider-Man is recruited by Severance‘s Tramell Tillman to track down the mysterious hooded figure, probably Sink’s character, who exhibits telekinesis and mind control.

However, a masked entity is shown operating behind the scenes, leading fans to assume it will become a major threat to Spider-Man.

What next?

Well, despite all the speculation and theories, this new trailer has given fans, we will just have to wait and see.

It’s clear, however, that it has definitely done what it’s meant to, leaving everyone hungry for more.

Yet with so much to be revealed, we are sure that this movie will explore a side to Spider-Man that has not yet been seen in the Holland-led franchise.
