Supergirl has officially premiered in cinemas, marking the next major chapter in the DC Universe (DCU).
It’s been nearly a year since Superman came out (11 July 2025), writes Film News Blitz’s Spencer Oza.
The highly anticipated superhero adventure introduces audiences to a new version of Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, as she steps into the spotlight in her own standalone story.
Who is Supergirl?
Following her brief appearance in Superman, fans have been eager to learn more about the powerful Kryptonian heroine and her role in the DCU’s future.
Supergirl, who is famously known as Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El, has been around since her official debut in DC Comics’ Action Comics #252 in May 1959.
Unlike previous adaptations of the character, this film takes a darker and more emotional approach to Kara’s story.
While Superman was raised on Earth by the loving Kent family, Kara experienced the destruction of Krypton in a far more personal way, shaping her into a tougher, more complex hero.
DC Studios co-head James Gunn selected the storyline as one of the key projects for the studio’s rebooted universe, making Supergirl one of the most important films in the franchise’s future.
What is ‘Supergirl’ about?
The film follows Kara Zor-El as she embarks on an interstellar journey after a ruthless enemy strikes close to home.
While attempting to celebrate her birthday with her loyal dog Krypto the Superdog, Kara finds herself drawn into a dangerous mission with a young alien named Ruthye Marye Knoll.
Together, they travel across the galaxy seeking justice against the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills.
The movie is full of cinematic fight scenes, emotional character development, breathtaking visual effects, and dramatic storytelling.
It combines exciting action with meaningful relationships, explores the characters’ personal struggles and motivations, and creates an engaging experience through its powerful soundtrack, impressive cinematography and memorable performances.
Superman movie involvement
One of the biggest talking points surrounding Supergirl is its connection to last year’s hit film Superman.
David Corenswet returns as Clark Kent/Superman after earning praise for his portrayal of the Man of Steel.
His performance helped launch the new DCU and introduced audiences to a more hopeful version of the iconic hero.
Rather than acting as a direct sequel, Supergirl expands the universe by showing another side of Kryptonian life.
The contrast between Superman’s hopeful outlook and Kara’s more troubled past creates an interesting dynamic that is expected to play a major role in future DC projects.

The message of feminism
The new movie is important as it highlights feminism by showing a strong female superhero who is brave, independent and capable of overcoming difficult challenges.
Instead of relying on others to save her, Supergirl takes control of her own story and proves that women are powerful, intelligent and heroic.
By placing a female hero at the centre of the story, the movie promotes gender equality by challenging traditional stereotypes about women.
This sends a positive message to the audience, especially to young girls, as it gives them a character to look up to and encourages them to believe in themselves and their abilities.
The actors’ performances
Australian Actress Milly Alcock takes on the lead role as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl.
Alcock started professional acting in 2014, when she made her television debut in a guest role on the Australian romantic comedy Wonderland.
Better known for her breakout performance in House of the Dragon, Alcock brings a rebellious energy and emotional depth to Kara in Supergirl.
Critics widely praise Alcock’s portrayal, calling her both fierce and vulnerable, with a distinct identity from Superman.
Eve Ridley stars as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Kara’s unlikely companion on her cosmic journey. Her performance provides much of the film’s emotional heart and helps drive the story forward.
Jason Momoa also makes his highly anticipated DC return, this time portraying the fan-favourite bounty hunter Lobo.
Known previously for playing Aquaman, Momoa brings a completely different energy to the role, delivering humour, chaos and larger-than-life action sequences.
What to expect next
Supergirl is only the latest step in DC Studios’ ambitious plans.
With Superman successfully launching the franchise and Supergirl now expanding it, attention is already turning toward upcoming projects scheduled for release over the next few years.
Due to the strong connection between Kara and Clark, fans have already begun speculating about how both characters will unite in future films as DC Studios continues building its interconnected universe.
Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie, with a screenplay written by Ana Nogueira.
