Steven Soderbergh has stepped in to keep production of The Batman Part II moving after Matt Reeves stepped away from filming to handle a personal matter.
Writer/director Reeves had been working hard on filming since June until he stepped away last week.
At the time, Warner Bros. and DC Studios said, “Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter.”
Speaking at the London Film Festival this week, Batman himself, Robert Pattinson, said: “We’re pausing for a little bit, and then we’re going to figure it all out.”
Soderbergh is the man to figure it out, as first reported by Deadline.
What the key figures have said
“As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part II,” a studio statement read.
“Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfil Matt’s vision of the film.”
It’s a great example of camaraderie and compassion exhibited by Soderbergh, who also released a statement.
“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent,” he said.
“The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”
Reeves posted on social media to confirm that The Batman: Part II remains his film to finish, and Soderbergh is merely helping out during a difficult time.
“Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II,” he wrote.
“I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography.
“Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes.”
The right man for the job
Soderbergh’s work speaks for itself.
From Ocean’s Eleven to Magic Mike, Soderbergh can masterfully switch genres.
That’s why his work also includes the pandemic thriller Contagion, the legal drama Erin Brockovich, and slick, cool spy flicks like Black Bag.
His filmmaking range makes him perfectly suited to answer the call of the Bat Signal.
Moreover, his willingness to personally reach out in Reeves’ time of need means he undoubtedly will treat The Batman Part II with the utmost care.
